Edwen (Year 6)

Welcome to Edwen's Classroom!

Teacher: Mrs Manon Jones

Hello and welcome to Dosbarth Edwen's class page! As you can see, we have new names for all the classes this year. We have gone after the names of the saints who lived on Anglesey centuries ago, and hopefully we will learn more about Saint Edwen during the year!

Mrs Manon Glyn Jones is the class teacher and Miss Nicola Jones will teach the class during PPA during the first term. In Edwen's class we encourage everyone to be positive, to respect each other and themselves, and to develop their skills to become ambitious learners.

PE – Our lesson will be on Tuesday afternoon so you are welcome to wear your PE kit to come to school on Tuesdays. Our swimming lessons will be on Wednesdays and they will be held until the end of November. We kindly ask you for a donation of £1.50 towards the cost of transport to go to Plas Arthur every Wednesday, please.

Reading books – Your child will receive reading books to practice their reading in class and at home. It will be appreciated if you can listen and discuss the books with your child at home. This year, we will go back to log reading books in the Reading Log Book (Cofnod Darllen), but you are more than welcome to record your child reading and post it on Seesaw if you wish to do so, in addition to the normal reading log. There are links on Google Classroom to websites that provide reading books on the web to read or listen to stories. Also, your child has access to online reading programs such as Reading Eggs and DarlenCo.

Homework: Following recent national research, we will no longer hand out weekly homework. We will however ask your child from time to time to discuss a few topics with you to prompt their interest in different aspects of the themes being studied.

Support / Inquiry – Contact via Seesaw message.

Our theme: We have been trialling new themes over the past few years and have brought the child's voice into the planning. The theme for this period up to February half term is 'Travelling', looking at traveling back in time to the 60s. We will read the novel from the 60s 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', learn about the space race and look at the history of famous people of the decade as well as learning about notable events of the time such as the flooding of Tryweryn. Within these themes, there will be an opportunity to interweave the 6 areas of learning and experience ensuring that there are constant cross-curricular opportunities. Through this, they can therefore appreciate music and express their ideas creatively through artistic work as well.

Mathematics: In the Mathematics lessons, we will continue to emphasize on mental work, exercises of the four rules, and continue to reinforce their knowledge of multiplication tables. We will develop further to work on shape and measurement, and then develop to data interpretation and probability skills whilst using what we have learned in our cross-curricular work. By the end of the year, we will have had an opportunity to develop some algebra skills as well.

Language: We will reinforce and develop our linguistic skills in Welsh and English through various oral, reading and writing tasks. As in the Numeracy work, there will be an opportunity to use the skills learned into the cross-curricular tasks.  We will also be introducing some international languages into our learning to embrace different cultures.

Health and Wellbeing: Pupils have the opportunity to keep physically and mentally healthy through Physical Education lessons, PSE sessions and Growth Mindset lessons.
