Y Pandy (Year 6)

Welcome to Y Pandy's Classroom!

Hello and welcome to Y Pandy’s class page!  A new name this year!  Which will hopefully reflect the importance of the local community to us here at Y Graig.  Mrs Manon Glyn Jones is the classroom teacher and the PPA teachers are Mrs Lisa Thomas and Mrs Elen Owen.  In Y Pandy we encourage everyone to be positive, to respect each other and themselves, and to develop into ambitious learners.

P.E. - Our lesson will be on Wednesday afternoons, and we will also have our swimming lessons on Wednesdays.  You can wear your PE clothes every Wednesday to school.  The swimming lessons will run until mid-November.

Reading books - Your child will receive reading books to practice in class and at home. It will be appreciated if you can listen and discuss the books with your child. This year, we will be using SeeSaw to record the books read as well as the usual reading record. This way the children will have the opportunity at school to record themselves reading, keeping a record on SeeSaw. There are links on Google Classroom to websites that provide online reading books to read or listen to stories. Also, your child has access to a range of reading programs namely Giglets, Reading Eggs and DarlenCo.

Homework: Following recent national research, we will no longer set weekly homework. We will however ask your child from time to time to discuss a few topics with you to further develop their interest in different aspects of the themes  studied.

Support / Inquiry – Contact via Seesaw message.

Our theme: We have been trialling new themes over the past few years and have brought the child's voice into the planning. The theme for this period up to February half term is 'War and Peace'. We had great ideas to ensure that the theme became relevant to the pupils. The children's input was important to us when planning our tasks and activities within the theme. We will therefore study work from the age of the Welsh Princes to the impact of the second world war on Wales. In addition to this, the pupils wanted to know more about animals in wars, the views of notable women in wars e.g. Anne Frank and Malala and what peace means to them personally. Mathematics: In Maths lessons, emphasis is on mental maths, the four rules, and we will continue to consolidate their knowledge of multiplication tables.  Throughout the year, we will develop further to work on units of shape and data, and are currently developing their measuring skills and knowledge, integrating learning within our cross-curricular work.

Language: We will reinforce and develop our linguistic skills in Welsh and English through various oral, reading and writing tasks.  During these lessons we will also study two novels that fit with our theme -- Friend or Foe by Michael Morpugo and Y Goron yn y Chwarel by Myrddin ap Dafydd.
Pupils have the opportunity to look after their physical and mental health through PE lessons, PSE sessions and mindfulness lessons. They are able to appreciate music and to express creativity through arts work.
